The Space Development Agency (SDA) has demonstrated the first-ever Link 16 network broadcast from space to the ground, the agency announced Nov. 28—a key milestone for its new constellation of satellites. In a release, SDA said it conducted three Link 16 demonstrations over the course of a week leading up to the announcement. Since its development in the 1970s, Link 16 has become the most widely used, secure, jam-resistant line- Link 16 is a tactical communications system that U.S. forces, NATO and international allies rely on for real-time data exchange. During the demonstration, SDA used three satellites from its Transport Layer, all built by Denver-based York Space Systems.The Air Force's 46th Test Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., supported the mission from the ground. Link 16 is an encrypted, jam-resistant Tactical Data Link (TDL) network used by U.S. and NATO Allies to create situational awareness among dispersed battle elements by sharing information, over a common communication link.
